What is a gene?
Genes are common across all species. Every living thing on this plant has
genes in their body. A gene is a functional unit of heredity, which means that
genes carry information, which can either help in building proteins or express
themselves in other ways in the body. Genes are made up of genetic material
called DNA. During copulation, genetic material is exchanged between two
organisms to produce cells they have new DNA. This new generic material or
genes from another organism, in this case, the offspring who is unique in its
DNA. Every person has two genes, which were passed on from both the parents.
These genes carry information about hair color, skin color, and even voice.
Some diseases are also passed on genetically from the parents to the child.
There are a number of such diseases like haemophilia, asthma, epilepsy and the
like. Certain kidney diseases can also be genetic, one such disease is
polycystic kidney disease.
What is polycystic kidney disease?
Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic condition that is transferred from
generation to generation. Clusters of fluid-filled cysts develop primarily
inside the kidneys and cause the kidneys to enlarge in size. The cysts develop
from the tiny vessels in the kidneys called nephrons. It is obvious that when
the kidneys enlarge in size the other organs get less space and cause problems
within the body. Kidneys, therefore, lose their function over time and cause
other conditions to develop within the body. The cysts also damage to the
tissue that forms the kidneys. A person suffering from this condition can have
over thousands of cysts in their kidneys. These cysts are generally non-cancerous.
Polycystic kidney disease is a common ailment and nearly two percent of the
kidney patients suffer from this condition. PKD causes other diseases to
develop, like chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease or kidney
failure. Currently, modern medicine has no polycystic kidney disease
treatment available.
