What is a gene?

What is polycystic kidney disease?

Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic condition that is transferred from generation to generation. Clusters of fluid-filled cysts develop primarily inside the kidneys and cause the kidneys to enlarge in size. The cysts develop from the tiny vessels in the kidneys called nephrons. It is obvious that when the kidneys enlarge in size the other organs get less space and cause problems within the body. Kidneys, therefore, lose their function over time and cause other conditions to develop within the body. The cysts also damage to the tissue that forms the kidneys. A person suffering from this condition can have over thousands of cysts in their kidneys. These cysts are generally non-cancerous. Polycystic kidney disease is a common ailment and nearly two percent of the kidney patients suffer from this condition. PKD causes other diseases to develop, like chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease or kidney failure. Currently, modern medicine has no polycystic kidney disease treatment available.
